It wasn’t that long ago that the “pet food recall” sent shock waves running through every one of us pet owners. And while the companies scrambled to fix the problem, many……and I mean MANY pet owners were left with sick and dying pets. The one good thing, for me, that came from that was a heightened awareness of knowing what I am feeding my pets. I now look to see if the food is “human grade” which means that the food is processed to the same standards and quality guidelines as human food. It seems that this has also given the person with a “special needs” pet more options with a wide range of choices. For the diabetic dog who needs to control glucose, there are grain free foods that are high in protein. The dog with a pancreatic condition who needs a low-protein diet now has choices. Dogs with allergies might need to transition away from cheaper foods loaded with corn and move to an all-natural food. There are also choices for the individual who feeds raw diets, in which case learning about the important role that calcium, fruits and vegetables play in helping the dog’s system absorb nutrition. The “pet food recall” has made us all aware that we are making choices that will affect the health of our pets. They are counting on us to choose wisely for them and we are counting on the manufacturers to give us the facts we need to do so. For more information about dog foods go to http://tinyurl.com/6jnpbr
